Should You Use Lightroom for HDR Editing?

It’s no secret that Adobe Lightroom is one of the most widely used RAW image editors out there. It is great for all types of photography, ranging from portraits to landscapes and architecture. It allows users to extensively tweak settings related to exposure, white balance, sharpness, clarity, color balance, and much more.

Lightroom can also be used to create HDR photos very easily. However, many users wonder why they should or shouldn’t use Lightroom for this purpose.

Use Lightroom for:

  • Quickly creating HDR photos within the same window where you’re editing your RAW exposures.
  • Easy to use interface, and not having to learn to use a whole new program.
  • More casual HDR needs as it can’t fully compete with dedicated HDR editors.
  • Having great integration with Photoshop if you like to edit your images further as well.

Use a Dedicated Editor for:

  • Much more features and tools to truly let you edit your HDR photos.
  • Great, natural looking results that you can control at every stage of the editing process.
  • Excellent, useful presets that allow for quick editing or act as a starting point for more extensive editing.
  • A lower price than Lightroom since they focus more on HDR editing than anything else.

As you can see, there are distinct advantages to using a dedicated HDR editor than relying on Lightroom for the same work. Lightroom is great if you want to stay within the same program, but there are HDR editors that provide Lightroom plugins as well so that may be a win-win situation for you.

A couple of excellent HDR editors are AuroraHDR 2018 and Photomatix Pro. You can use both to great effect and they both provide a very wide array of editing tools and features, as well as boasting a very simple and user-friendly interface. You can find them at www.aurorahdr.com and www.hdrsoft.com respectively.
